10th November 2015. Right Whale Bay, South Georgia.
.
Our first landing on South Georgia and the only time we encountered snow. Little comment is required for most of these images. All the penguins are King Penguins. There are also elephant seals, fur seals and a skua.
.
The young male elephant seal has been in the wars. Probably aspirations beyond his station.

A view from near the shore looking inland.

The penguins here are all King Penguins. They are similar in appearance to Emperor Penguins but not as large, up to a metre in height. Some species of prehistoric penguins reached as high as two metres.
.
.
Two methods of locomotion – walking and sliding on the belly.

.
A skua, probably on the lookout for a dead penguin.

The penguins don’t climb up there.

Patterns on the mountain side.

Fur seals have right of way….

A last glimpse before departing in the zodiacs as the weather closes in.

I could have a lot of fun with captions on some of the penguin groupings. I love the tall ‘penguins don’t climb up there’ photo. I have to say that one of the things I love about these posts is that I see places I could not get to myself, being the kind of being that gets seasick on anything too big to row and airsick in anything smaller than a 747.

Perhaps I should print that one.
I’m probably not going back to these places and even if I did it would all be quite different. Photography provides both a motivation for going there and an opportunity to create something evocative from the experience.

Amazing pictures Murray, great compositions and combinations of the Penguin groups and the unique landscape. Especially taken in account the unfriendly weather we had on that day/afternoon I am impressed of the quality and detail of ure images . Thanks so much for sharing . I am soon on my way with the same boat and the same grate team of people to Antarctica. Regards Jon “leftjohn” Langeland
