Remains of solitary confinement gaol.
The convict past was so horrific on this island that it remains frozen in nineteenth century colour, a kind of distorted sepia.

.
At the site of the military barracks
.
.
.
Bread oven at the back
.
.
.
Military barracks.
.
.
.
An old wharf, not from the convict era but not the main current one either.
.
.
.
Once was a building….
.
.
.
Ruins of the New Penitentiary
.
.
.
Potential swim to freedom….
.
.
.
Nature would like to take over the remains.
.
.
.
You might think these are the ghosts of convicts dressed in modern clothes but I think not.
.
.
.
Back on the mainland (a larger island), we are walking towards the Molten Gold Waterfall (Hogarth Falls)
.
.
.
The bush can be quite dense
.
.
.
Blue ferns and foam at a quiet stream
.
.
.
Here we see some of the gold froth washed down from the waterfall.
.
.
.
Small plants on the bank.
.
.
.
And here it is. The Molten Gold Waterfall.
.
.
.
Colour changes minute by minute according to impurities washed up with the gold.
.
.
.
And this is just below the waterfall.
