Day 61. 29th August. Central North-East Iceland.
.
At the side of the road, south of Husavik.
.
I had intended to drive from Husavik to Bakkagerði by the seldom-used coastal road via Kópasker, Raufarhöfn, Þórshöfn, Bakkafjörður and Vopnafjörður. However I had to get the campervan back on the appointed time and I calculated I needed to go the direct route on the tar to save some time.
.
This is also between Husavik and Mývatn, but closer to Mývatn.
.
This image and the next five are somewhere in the area of Mývatn.
.
All are landscapes highly affected by volcanic activity.

.
This image and the next two are past Mývatn, between the western road to Dettifoss and Selfoss that I took and the eastern sealed route that most people take. Stark volcanic landscapes under dramatic skies.
.
In the distance is the suspension bridge across the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river that leads to Dettifloss, Selfoss and Vesterdalur. You can see it a bit more clearly if you click on the image for a larger view. The point I took the photograph from is marked on the map above as “View of suspension bridge”.
.
.
This is closer to Egilsstaðir and the view is not so stark.
.
There was a more direct route to Bakkagerði but I was running short of petrol and needed to go to Egilsstaðir. So I had dinner in Egilsstaðir and drove on. This is just north of Bakkagerði, on the ridge between Héradsflói and Borgarfjörður Eystri, looking towards Héradsflói.
.
Just before Bakkagerði, I found I had another flat tyre. Those of you who read earlier posts will know I had no capacity of changing the wheel. This time I was not so far from a town and on a good road.
.
From the same place, looking in another direction, this is Bakkagerði in the distance and Borgarfjörður Eystri (the fjord) behind it. I drove into town while destroying the tyre but not the wheel and parked for the night outside the garage.
.
Iceland is a much bigger island than I thought. Lends itself well to landscapes.

It’s a paradise for landscapes. So many different opportunities. I reckon the Faroes would be pretty amazing too, though they’re expensive to visit.
