We drove up the coast from Adelaide and then down the coast of the Yorke Peninsula, not necessarily on the main roads.
.
Rising Sun Hotel, Port Wakefield.
Port Wakefield is a small town with less than 600 population at the top of the St Vincent Gulf. It was founded in 1848, originally as Port Henry but the name was changed in 1849. Initially its purpose was to transport copper discovered in surrounding areas but later the focus became the pastoral industry.

I had thought there might be bird photography opportunities at the boardwalk at Port Wakefield, but no. There were other things to see though.

We met some of the locals and they were quite welcoming.

Fishing requires a lot of patience and it’s important not to be distracted.

Some of them did seem rather undernourished though. Perhaps life is hard in country towns.

Unusual to see a werewolf in full daylight. I don’t think it was even full moon.

Salt mining perhaps?

Ospreys on the Coobowie Platform.
Between 2016 and 2018, surveys found no breeding pairs of ospreys which led to remedial measures. This platform opened in 2023. It was a community project, the tower built by the local Men’s Shed and lowered into place by helicopter. The nest was made by local school children using sticks and seaweed. Other community organisations were also involved.
Within four hours of its completion, a pair of ospreys had taken residence. The had nested in a Telecom tower in nearby Edithsburgh, which was not so good for either the tower or the birds. Four eggs were laid in the nest on the tower and at the time of the article I read, the chicks had grown and were all doing well.
There is supposed to be a bird hide. I didn’t find that, I just took these photos from the shore with a very long telephoto lens.
You probably can’t really see it even if you click on the image for a larger view but there is a catch, perhaps a fish, under the bird sitting on the nest..

We are are on a quiet side road further down the coast though not as far as Inneston, Dhiba Guuranda-Innes National Park and the tip of Yorke Peninsula yet.

Thanks very much Deb! I estimate from Google Earth that the lighthouse would have been about a kilometre away from where I took the photo.

Great trip… thanks! On the lighter side, some of them may have been waiting for your food supplies for some time? 🙏🙏😇😅👌

Thanks very much Dave. Yes, the Ospreys were great. Fujifilm X-T5 + 150-600mm +1.4x TC, so full-frame equivalent of 1260mm.

[1] Heart-warming story about the ospreys and some great action shots added.
[2] Great art work on the silos – need that skill to paint my sheds.
[3] How did they build Troubridge Point lighthouse including the brickwork at the top?

(1) Great to find them. (2) It may take some practice. (3) Brick by brick I guess. It looks recent so I guess there’s a steel structure inside.
