This is the last temporary post from the Atacama Desert and also from my trip to Mauritius, Reunion, Madagascar, Falklands, South Georgia and Atacama. I will eventually put up permanent posts with more images and information but it will take some time.
I am currently working on images from the Narooma Blues Festival from before I left and will post on that next. Then I will post on Iceland from my trip there in 2013. I will also be photographing at the Thredbo Blues Festival in January so there will be a post for that. After finishing Iceland posts, I will be posting on the Madagascar/ South Georgia trip. All of that will take about six months to complete and longer if I am tempted by another trip somewhere in that period.

WWWWOOOWWW. How did you get those flamingos to pose solo (or the group of three) so perfectly??? It looks so peaceful. Somewhat reminiscent of the Salton Sea – though we have different flora and fauna – but the salt expanses look similar to our barnacle shore. Perhaps you should be tempted by a trip here while there is still a lake. It will start to go down a lot in 2017.

When I got there, there were some flamingos wandering around but other people moving too fast made them fly away and then I only had distant ones to contemplate. After a while I got called back (it wasn’t a specifically photographic tour) when some more flamingos had just moved closer. Closer is relative, though. I was using a very long telephoto and I just managed to get some good images before I had to go.
I’m expecting to sign up soon for a photo tour to Cuba in early September 2016. There will be other destinations though I’m not quite sure what yet. That will probably involve going through LA in one or both directions in which case I’ll be able to drop by before or after. If you’re thinking of a trip to the Salton Sea – which would be awesome, I’d advise coming after Cuba rather than before. It’s um… kinda roasty… in August. September will be still quite* toasty enough.

Wow, travel plus! Can’t wait to see images from S. Georgia, a place I really would like to visit some day.

It’s definitely a trip I don’t imagine I’ll be able to repeat (as in the whole trip, not just Atacama).
South Georgia was remarkable and we had variable but good weather, skirting some big storms but always being able to land. The experience was quite different from the Atlantic Peninsula, where there are many sheltering islands and extensive zodiac cruises are the order of the day. In South Georgia, it’s just shore landings because there are very few sheltered bays. The wildlife, though, is incredible and not at all phased by humans.
