Morning at La Push.

It was a clear, still warm day, with the sun pouring down and an occasional maned wolf wandering by.  Somewhere.  Not here.  Wild and rainy.  Rather nice.

A gull on my balcony.

Taken with a telephoto lens (so I wasn’t as close as it may seem).  I think it is a juvenile glaucous-winged gull.

We are now at Second Beach.  I don’t know the name of the island.

Maybe you could walk out there.  Whether you could walk around the base of the rock might be another matter.  If possible, there’d be a good view from the top.  You’d have to keep an eye on the tide though.

There are many drift logs on beaches along this coast

Much effort must have been spent naming this beach and the ones just to the north and south.  Perhaps there was  a public competition and there was a prize for the most imaginative or outlandish name.   Or perhaps they were named by the cabin boy of the first ship passing along the coast.  Or perhaps they were named by the first Amerindians in the region, maybe 18,000 years ago.  (South America actually had the first settlers, maybe 25,000 to 30,000 years ago.  The Beringia route is a nineteenth century myth.  The earliest settlers may have island-hopped across the south Pacific when the sea level was around 125 metres lower {400 feet}.  Later arrivals were via the Aleutians or along the sea coast.)  In any case, this is Second Beach.  The beach to the north at La Push is First Beach, and the one to the south is Third Beach.

There are many small islands off the coast here.

There is a walking trail to Second Beach off the road to La Push.  However, there is very little space to park a car.  I imagine this could be inconvenient in peak season.  It’s an easy walk in though.

All these islands and sea stacks, not just the ones you see in this image, are known as the Quilleute Needles.

Maybe much more interesting than a calm day…..

There’s a gull on top of this stack, safe from the breaking waves.

Very flat-topped one there.  Maybe a good place to pitch a tent.  Getting up there with the tent is another issue.

A tough place for a tree to grow.

The centre one is just hanging on; the left and right ones, not so much.

A rock on the beach, maybe an island at high tide.

I encountered local photographer Jim Wood and his grandson and his friend.  A link for his images no longer works.  That’s his grandson on top of the rock.

Wild water at the north point of the beach.

There’s a tuft of foliage on top of that rock.  Maybe a small tree forlornly trying to grow.

A pile of driftwood and logs at the north end of the beach.

The logs would be wet from rain rather than sea spray.

A bit like onions.  Mmmm.  Could be lunch there.

Site Update (Search):  I recently discovered that the Search box only produced one result at a time.  This was not much use since there are nearly 1,300 posts.  So I worked out how to fix that.

There is now a magnifying glass beside the menu at the top, to search and to find a list of results.  It’s a little bit slow but it works.  You should get a picture and a description, twenty at a time.

  • However, there is no featured image for the first 650 posts so those posts don’t have an image in your search results.   It would take me around 50 hours to correct that and I may not find the time.
