Day one of a surfing photography workshop with Michael Clark and Brian Bielmann.

On 18 February I undertook the long flight from Canberra to Honolulu, which confusingly left at 12.45pm and arrived at 7.30am on the same day.  This is just after dawn, getting close to Honolulu, with the sun partly hidden behind the wing of the plane.

The next day the workshop commenced.  It was based at the Turtle Bay Resort, on the north-east corner of Oahu, where the rooms are $375 per night after discount.  Fortunately, months earlier I had talked to a woman in the queue at the Los Angeles Domestic Airport who told me of a friend who let rooms and I was able to stay in a townhouse close by.

The two leaders of the workshop were Michael Clark, adventure photographer and technical guru, and Brian Bielmann,  epic surf photographer with a career starting in the 1970s.  Surf conditions had been unsuitable for several weeks but it was improving.  However, this morning the surf was flat so we had several presentations on subjects including Lightroom, colour management and surfing photography.

Later in the afternoon, the surf picked up somewhat so we headed to nearby Rocky Point for some photography.

Because the surf was fairly small there were some quite young surfers testing the waves.

A fair distance away (to the north east) there were a couple walking on the sand.

… and in the other direction, also in the distance, there was a couple standing in the water as the wash of the waves came in.

The afternoon was approaching evening and the light was going down…
