Haleakala and Away

Maui, Hawaii, 8 March 2015

Haleakala, Haleakala National Park, Hawaii, Lanai, Landscape, Maui, Photography, seascape, Travel

We had gone to the summit of Haleakala a couple of days before, arriving at 3am to ensure a close parking place.  However, there was a driving wind, it was very cold and there was a thick mist that dissuaded me from photography. The cold is not surprising because it is 10,000 feet or 3,000 metres high.

On the our last morning in Maui we tried again at about 10am and the conditions were much the same.  This time I thought I should at least photograph some of the people braving the elements to reach the observation hut.

And since I was here, I thought I should take a photograph of the view.

.

There were also other things up there than the view.  These are ‘ahinahina or Haleakala Silversword.  This is a very rare plant specific to Haleakala that has previously been threatened by cattle, goats and the irresponsible behaviour of humans.

However, we did manage to get a view, through intermittent clouds, at the first lookout back down from the summit.

Later, on the flight back to Honolulu, we caught a glimpse of Lanai, a small, sparsely populated island.

We spent that night at Waikiki, prior to our flight back to Australia the next morning.  I found this gallery of Peter Lik.  Peter Lik is an Australian photographer who achieved fame (or is it infamy?) for claiming to have sold a photograph for $US6,500,000 though there is no documentary proof of this and the buyer is unknown.

His prints are very large and detailed and technically well produced.  Some of them I found impressive, such as the tree panorama on the left that you can half see due to the acute angle.  The colours of that print did not appear to be realistic but the composition and colour design was so strong that this did not matter.  Others, such as one of Antelope Canyon, I found garish and overdone.  I find the same with Peter Eastaway, a prominent Australian photographer who to my taste often just takes colours and tonalities too far.

I have more sympathy with the late Tasmanian wilderness photographer Peter Dombrovskis, New Zealand landscape photographer Andris Apse and Australian photographer of Lake Eyre Murray Fredericks.  Perhaps it says something of my preferences that all of these three established their reputation as large format film photographers.

Following images are all from Kahanu Gardens.  On the next few images we have a series of some of the plants cultivated in the garden and shot in infrared. You might think it’s bizarre to display plant identification shots in infrared but the only reason you might think that is because it is. Apart from that, no other reason at all.

If you find these plants instantly identifiable, resplendent in their natural colours, then you may have a problem. Either you’ve been eating bread contaminated with ergot and are hallucinating or some of your ancestors were snakes. Many or all snakes see in the infrared zone as a way of identifying prey. So perhaps these images may bring out your inner serpentes. And then if you know people who you suspect may be snakes you could always just ask them “Do you see things that glow in the dark?”. Particularly if you live in a country area away from street signs.

Kalo.

Here we have Kalo, called taro in most of the rest of Polynesia. It was such an important staple that Hawaiians were said by legend to be descended from the kalo plant. This is a particularly good photograph of a kalo sign, not so much the plants which are mainly out of focus. So this image may help you to recognise another Kalo sign should you stumble across one. Of course you could always just read it, but maybe that would be cheating.

Kahanu Gardens and Pi’ilanihale Heiau

Maui, Hawaii, 7 March 2015

Archaeology, Hawaii, Heiaus, History, Kahanu Gardens, Landscape, Maui, Photography, Pi'ilanihale Heiau, seascape, Travel

This post is a novelty we haven’t seen for a while, not for ten posts back in fact.  It doesn’t contain any infrared images.  I understand there are some posts in other blogs like this too.

We took off along the south west road, past all the places we went to the previous day, towards Kahanu Gardens.  The first image is at the side of the road not long after we took off, a particularly overgrown patch of forest that caught my eye.

.

Archaeology, Hawaii, Heiaus, History, Kahanu Gardens, Landscape, Maui, Photography, Pi'ilanihale Heiau, seascape, Travel

Past Hana, we have arrived at Kahanu Gardens and the huge expanse of grey stone in the background is Pi’ilanihale Heiau.  In early times. Maui comprosed three chiefdoms, at Wailuku, Lele (Lahaina), and Hana.  By 1550, Ali’i Nui (High Chief) Pi’ilani, based at Wailuku, ruled both Wailuku and Lele.  Then he acquired Hana by marriage to become ruler over all of Maui. Pi’ilanihale Heiau is named after him, Pi’ilanihale meaning “house of Pi’ilani “.

.

It is the largest heiau in the Hawaiian Island and we can get a better idea of the size of it from an aerial view taken from an information board.  It is said to be 15 metres high (50 feet) and 130 by 100 metres (415×340 feet) at the top.  The whole area is kapu so you can’t climb on it or get very close to it.

It was constructed mainly in the 16th century, on top of a smaller earlier structure from the 12th century.

Much of the gardens were a sugar cane plantation from the mid-nineteenth century.  The gardens were established in 1974 after gifts from descendents of Ali’i Kahanu and the Hana Ranch.  There are some family graves at the back of the house from the Kahanu family that speak of a sad untold story:

  • Anekehawa Kahanu 1917-1922
  • Kaapana Kahanu 1878-1919

Kipahulu/ Haleakala National Park

Maui, Hawaii, 6 March 2015

Haleakala National Park, Hawaii, Infrared, Kipahulu, Landscape, Maui, Oheo Pools, Photography, seascape, Travel

Later in the afternoon we visited the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park.  Haleakala is the huge mountain that comprises the southern part of Maui and this part of the National Park is not at the summit, rather on the flanks of the mountain on the southern coast, incorporating Waimoku Falls.

The image above is of a Hale Ku’au, a house for displaying, storing and trading.  The thatch stands out so much from the surrounding vegetation because this is an infrared image. Live plant material emits infrared light and the thatch is not living vegetation so it is quite a different colour to the trees behind.

I came across this creature out in the open, moving from one body of water to another.  I thought it might perhaps be a crayfish and perhaps a rare native Hawaiian species.  It is in fact a Malaysian Prawn, a giant prawn inadvertently introduced.  They were being farmed in a creek and a flash flood swept them out to sea.  What the fish farmers had not considered was that they can swim in the sea so they spread and are now a pest.

Here is a shot of a massive Moreton Bay fig, stretching out a great distance with some almost horizontal branches.  It is a three-shot panorama using a 24mm tilt-shift lens, which should produce perfect registration.  Not entirely successful, though because the light was too bright, resulting in too much light and shadow.  This sort of shot works best under heavy cloud cover.

.

Haleakala National Park, Hawaii, Infrared, Kipahulu, Landscape, Maui, Oheo Pools, Photography, seascape, Travel

However, this infrared image of the same tree works just fine.  The highlights on the ground seem less of a problem in IR.

It almost looks like a set from Lord of the Rings.  One almost expects to see some Menehune sitting around.  Menehune were mythological small people who lived in forests.  This may refer to the original settlers from the Marquesas, displaced hundreds of years later by a new wave of settlers from Tahiti.

We went as far as the cane forest, though I must admit that did not impress me greatly.  A nice walk nonetheless, even if we did not get as far as the waterfall.

.

Haleakala National Park, Hawaii, Infrared, Kipahulu, Landscape, Maui, Oheo Pools, Photography, seascape, Travel

This is a sign one has to take some notice of.  People have fallen over the cliff, concealed perhaps by vegetation, and died.  A father and son also ignored signs and climbed down to the creek.  A flash flood swept them away and they drowned, as mother and daughter watched.

.

Perhaps this overgrown environment is suggestive of a cold forest with a forest fire behind.

The drive back to our accommodation was along the somewhat notorious Hana coastal road (on the eastern coast).  Curious little stretches of one lane road and blind corners with the prospect of having to back.  The south road is like that too, in parts.  It was also dark and raining but there was not much traffic.  Actually I found it rather fun.

Maui – South Coast

Maui, Hawaii, 6 March 2015

Hawaii, Hui Aloha Church, Infrared, Kaupo, Landscape, Maui, Mokulau, Photography, Puka'auhuhu, seascape, Travel

Having headed north in Maui the previous day, we headed south, along the coast from the west.  This is a viewpoint we came to near the side of the road, with the island of Kahoolawe in the background and a volcanic vent in the foreground.  There is very little population or agriculture in this part of the island, due to its relatively recent coverage by lava.

A half an hour further on, we came to a viewpoint at the top of a cliff, possible Nu’u Bay, I’m not sure.  At the bottom of the cliff there appeared to be a second hand car dealer’s yard.  Well, at least I presume they are second hand.  If they are new then it would appear the yard is a bit too close to the sea.  Good tyres, though.  In buying a second-hand car it’s always important to look for good tyres. There is a remarkable sculptural quality to the panelling.  I’m not sure whether you pay extra for that.

This vehicle, with very fetching upholstery, comes with a spare fuel container in the boot, which is conveniently left open so you can see that.

This car is beside what appears to be a small heiau.  A sacrifice to Motuka, the god of stray vehicles, perhaps?

As you can see, the sea is not far away at all.  We already had a rental car so I didn’t need to go down to the bottom of the cliff to investigate purchasing another vehicle.  Besides, the driveway seemed a little rough and I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to drive one out of there.

A little later, we came to St Joseph’s church at Puka’auhuhu.  I didn’t photograph the church itself, but this is the vicarage, or whatever alternative word may be appropriate to describe the residence of a priest.

At the back of the church was this cemetery.

We also met Dave Wyman from California, on holiday with his family.  This is his photographic website.

Not much further on was the great metropolis of Kaupo, with a store and a couple of houses.  Here we have a Mustang driving past.

… and one of the houses.  Even as late as the turn of the twentieth century, there was a thriving community here, but very few now.  Walkers from the top of Haleakala may come out here, after walking though the Haleakala Valley and through the Kaupo Gap.

Inside it’s like stepping back in time in more ways than one.  This is part of the museum of Nick Soon, the original owner of the store and a photographer by trade.  Nick died in 1970 and the current owner took over then.

It was built in 1859, when there was a more significant population in the area, and has recently been restored.

Maui – North Coast

Maui, Hawaii, 4 to 5 March 2015

Hawaii, Iao Valley, Infrared, Kauai, La Perouse Bay, Landscape, Molokai, Nature, Photography, seascape, Travel

In the early afternoon of the 4th, we flew from Kauai direct to Maui.  I was wondering where in Maui this view from the plane was until I realised it is a view of Molokai, a nearby island, as we flew past.

This on the other hand is definitely Maui.  A line of wind generators on the northern volcano.

The next day, we went on a journey around the northern part of the island.  Apart from a stop for lunch, our first stop was the ‘Iao Valley, where after a fierce battle in the 1790s, the river was said to be blocked with bodies and to run red with blood.

When we were there though, it was a normal day and the river was a normal colour.

The peak on the left is known as the ‘Iao Needle.

In 1790, Kamahameha landed at nearby Kahului Bay with a fleet of canoes and twelve hundred warriors.  The Ali’i nui (paramount chief) of Maui, Kahekili II, was at Oahu, which he had conquered in 1783, so Kamehameha met Kahekili’s son, Kalanikupule.  The armies were evenly matched and the women and children watched the contest of men, wooden spears and muskets from the side of the valley.  The battle continued for two days without a resolution.  On the third day it was decided in Kamehameha’s favour by two cannons operated by John Young and Isaac Davis.  Most of the Maui nobility escaped but the carnage was so severe it was said the river was blocked with bodies and ran red.  Consequently, the battle was known as Kepaniwai or “the damning of the waters”.

The battle didn’t win Kamehameha control of Maui, however.  He went back to Hawaii and needed a couple of further battles to extend his rule over that whole island.  In 1794,  Kahekili died and there was a civil war for the Maui domains which Kalanikupule won.  In 1795, Kamehameha invaded Oahu and attacked Kalanikupule’s army.  Kamehameha was much better provisioned with musket and cannon and pushed Kalanikupule’s forces back until they were trapped atop a cliff.  800 warriors went over the edge and died.

We didn’t stay very long at the ‘Iao Valley because it was raining.  We continued on along the eastern side of the north coast.  Maui is essentially two huge volcanoes connected by an isthmus.  You can see the southern part of Maui in the distance.

Below the vantage point of the earlier image was a natural arch.  If you look closely (or click on the image to see it at a larger size) you can see the remains of a structure on the rock.  There is a wooden frame, remains of some fabric and a couple of rusted metal chairs.  Much too exposed for a camping place, it must have been a makeshift fishing shelter.

I had not realised that I was driving on the notorious Kahekili Highway, often a narrow one-lane road with blind corners and a drop off over the cliff to the sea.  I was intrigued by the sign that popped out from this school bus, ensuring traffic from both directions must stop while passengers alight.  I encountered this bus at different times travelling in both directions, but fortunately not in a difficult section of the road.

In this image, I believe the land in the distance is the island of Molokai.

At one point I drove up to behind a white van on a narrow, one-lane stretch of road.  Two wheels of the van were off the road on the cliff side.  It had evidently tried to pull over where the road was too narrow and where someone had to back.  Two jeeps were managing to just squeeze past so I had to back up.  I got Jools out of the car to direct me and slowly managed to get back to a corner with space for passing.  After the jeeps had gone through I kept on going and managed to squeeze through past the van.

This truck was parked beside the road but there was no sign indicating it was for sale.  Visibility while driving it may not have been too good anyway.

Just past the truck was a bridge over a creek where I took this shot looking upstream.

Suddenly the weather changed and everything looked different.  This is looking downstream.

And then, just a few seconds later according to camera date-times, the weather changed again and everything was as it had been.

This is somewhere on the northern coast of Maui.

I think the land in the distance here is the island of Kahoolawe.  Kahoolawe had been settled in historic times but by the end of the eighteenth century it was abandoned, due to war and shortage of water there.  When Kamehameha III abolished the death penalty in 1830 and replaced it with exile, Kahoolawe became a penal colony.  However, it was a savage place to try to survive and it was abandoned as a penal colony in 1853.  It is currently a nature reserve and efforts are underway to rescue it from environmental degradation.

A different view from a similar position.

We are now in the southern part of the western coast of Maui.  That is the southern part of Maui and Maount Haleakala you can see in the distance.

I found much of the western coast of Maui disappointing, being infested with resort hotels and condominiums.  Even what once would have been the charming town of Lahaina appeared to me in large part an over-populated tourist trap.  Fortunately not all of Maui is like this.

.

Hawaii, Iao Valley, Infrared, Kauai, La Perouse Bay, Landscape, Molokai, Nature, Photography, seascape, Travel

We drove down the coast to La Perouse Bay for the sunset.  La Perouse visited and mapped the bay in 1786 and had fond memories of the warm welcome he received from the local people.  When he visited again a few years later, there was no-one living there.  There had been a volcanic eruption and lava flows had eradicated all signs of settlement.  These days, this is the end of the road.  The road goes on a little way past the over-settled zone but it’s a lava landscape and too rough for roads to go far.

(Trivea note:  One mile of images and 200,000 words.  There are now 5,444 images in this blog.  If I printed them all at A4 and laid them end to end, they would be one mile long or 1.62 kilometres.  There are also now more than 200,000 words in the blog.  The 200,000th word was cliff, in red and bold just under the image of the bus further up in this post.  A while ago I read a biography of Joanna of Naples and decided that book averaged 456 words per page.  At that rate, the words in this blog are equivalent to a 440 page book.

Therefore, if this is the first post you have encountered in this blog and you would like to see all the images and read all the commentary, it may take you some time….)
