Tana

12th October 2015. Antananarivo (Tana), Madagascar.

.

The previous post covered my visit to the Rova of Antananarivo, the palace of the Merina monarchs, high above the city. This is my journey back to the hotel. All except the first two were taken from inside the car, often on the fly. There is a high failure rate doing this and some of these images are somewhat technically challenged but still included because they contribute to the story.

The centre of Tana can look very attractive with the flowering Jackarandas though it is also the capital city of a very poor country.

A delightful fleeting encounter at a roadside market.  Remember, I am in a car.

A Citroen Light 15!

Lots of people and small stores at the side of the road.

A measure of how poor the country is, is how many people there are pulling hand carts.  The father here…

… is pulling his daughter and maybe a bag of rice.

The main road with some cars, pedestrians and some hand carts.

This one is more like a skateboard truck.

People coming back from the river with the washing, maybe.

We are still inside the City of Antananarivo.  Any land suitable for growing rice gets used.

A farming village in the middle of a city.

A makeshift playing field where youth from all over the city come.  To my surprise, they were playing rugby here not soccer.

A rice-growing village beside the road.  The path in is at the bottom right corner.  Every year they get flooded and have to move out to higher ground.

There were several larger piles here too.  Perhaps she is gathering sand for mortar in building.

Not a typical urban view….

  1. An excellent glimpse into local life. Loved the purple trees. I see you’ve fixed the WordPress space issue by using full stops 😀
