Mauritius

6th to 10th October 2015

I’m in Madagascar now and actually have a viable internet connection tonight.  I nearly had this post ready to go a week ago but ran out of time.  Here are some images from Mauritius.  Not much time tonight.  Probably have to get up about 4am to catch a plane….

    • Orchha is definitely special. Editing does take a long time. For the past few weeks I have been having trouble finding time to view what I have taken let alone the initial cull. Probably more free time coming up in the next few days though.

      • My view on Orchha has been shaped by a book I read on Why Nations Fail – that one reason they fail os because of the lack of institutions that have been built up for development and administration. Orchha typifies this for me

      • I’m very slow to respond due to the demands of travel.

So you’re saying that all the resources were spent on grandiose projects for temples and palaces and not in infrastructure and social development. That probably largely applies to the Moguls too, I would think.

I’ve recently come from Madagascar which is much poorer than India, especially in the South where it is a wonder that people can survive. Here they even lack the grand buildings and the couple that remain are shells. Corruption is no doubt a problem and has been more so in the past but lack of a taxation base I suspect is a significant barrier to infrastructure investment.

    • Mauritius is really a place to get on a boat, go snorkelling, visit some of the little boat harbours (though navigating for driving a car is exacting and parking often very scarce). I’ll soon have a quick post on Reunion which is very different and quite spectacular.
