Antelope Canyon, Arizona, USA, 29th October 2014.
In the morning we had a visit to Antelope Canyon, in Navajo land, near Page, Arizona, accompanied by a Navajo giude.

Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon and there are quite a few of these in this region, though many may be difficult to access. They are narrow winding canyons, sculpted by water.

Flash floods are a potential issue as the flood water may come from many kilometres away. Eleven tourists died in the lower canyon during as flash flood in 1997. We were in the upper canyon and safety measures have improved but the issue remains.

Thanks very much, Lynda. It was very amazing. I was expecting to take wide angles but it ended up as telephotos. Also, you’re not advised to change lenses in there because of dust. There were a lot of people going through but we had an excellent Navajo guide who organised the experience very well. I’m told Canyon X is even better – there’s a long walk in but few visitors and you have as much time as you want. Next post (tomorrow) is monochrome conversions of some of these images. I’ve been pushing a bunch of these through before I head off to Hawaii.

Yes, I can imagine changing lenses in there would be a challenge! What a cool experience – I’m sure a good guide in a place like this would make a big difference. Lucky you to be heading to Hawaii! Safe travels.

Great images, Murray. I’ve never been to this location but a number of my photo colleagues have made the trip. I must say, your images are way better than most I’ve seen on this subject.

I have seen many examples of these canyons – excellent clean examples – is there sufficient light for handheld?

Thanks very much, Scott. I would think the answer is no. The metadata is inluded with the images if you use one of those utilities that allows you to see. I don’t have the images on this laptop and don’t currently have time to download such a utility.

That one is four or five images with different focus points combined to maximise depth of field.
