  1. Murray, I love the tonal contrasts in these monochrome images! So many “favorites,” though the fifth and the thirteenth really drew me in. And the last? Love its wonderful drama. That said, the color of these formations is breathtaking, so I’m really glad you posted both sets! I don’t remember seeing the 2nd to the last in your earlier post. A gorgeous vista with wonderful leading lines – I’d love to see this one in color 🙂

    • The quick and cheap way is an R72 filter. Usually you will need a tripod. With a DSLR your viewfinder will go black so you need to compose and focus beforehand – or use live view. Mirrorless cameras don’t generally have optical viewfinders and I find with my Fujis I could compose and autofocus with the filter on.

Then the more serious route is to have a camera converted and then you can also hand hold. Mirrorless cameras are probably more suitable because you’ll probably get autofocus errors through the viewfinder on a DSLR (though not with live view). Still, that doesn’t rule out DSLRs. Then you have to decide what kind of conversion you want. You can go for one that gives you straight mono output and therefore requires little post-processing but I went for a colour one which gives greater flexibility even if you only want mono.

If you start off with a colour image, it will be a murky orange one that you have to batter into shape to get it looking interesting. The LifePixel site (where I got my conversion done) has useful videos and information: http://www.lifepixel.com/
